FACTS ABOUT OUR BEAM MANTELS:
All beams are hand sanded to help prevent splinters and make them easier to clean.
All beams are treated for insects and worms.
All beams are clean and free of dust.
All beams are sound, even though they may have checks.
Some beams are sealed or lacquered and others are left unfinished. All smooth beams are lacquered with catalyzed lacquer. The more rustic hand-hewn beams are sealed with sanding sealer. Sanding sealer is a primer for varnish and can be varnished over. Our catalog will specify whether each individual beam is finished or not. If you choose to have an unfinished beam finished, you can expect the color to darken 2-3 shades.
Checks - the natural occuring cracks as the wood ages and drys over time.
Mortise - a rectangular cavity that has been chiseled into a beam to receive a tenon. Used in mortise and tenon joinery.
Tenon - the projecting end of a beam for inserting into a mortise to make a joint.
Peg - a wood dowel used to fasten the mortise and tenon joint together.
Hand-hewn - the original process used to convert a tree into a beam using a hand axe.
Sanding Sealer- a primer for varnish which is used on unfinished beams.
Vinyl sealer - can be varnished over. It protects the wood and helps keep the wood stable. Sealing the beam gives it a smoothersurface, brings out the color and makes it easier to clean.
Catalyzed lacquer - a durable topcoat finish. It is highly resistant to chemicals and to heat.
